Mathews 2010
Mathews have unveiled their 2010 range and you can check out all the details on their website. We have the 2010 flagship bow, the Z7, on the shelf now so come on in for a test fire. Smooth to draw, quick and light - only 3.97lbs, with a nice slim grip. We think it's a winner!

If you liked the idea of the 2009 Monster but were not convinced about shooting a 6" brace height, the 2010 range has answered your call. The Monster is now available with a 5.5", 6" or 7" brace height. The 7" is also available out to 31" so if you've got a long draw, now you can have a Monster too! Kevin has ordered his!

Kadin Willis NZBS Youngest Ever Master Bowhunter
Congratulations to Staff Shooter Kadin Willis on becoming the youngest ever Master Bowhunter in the New Zealand Bowhunter's Society. Kadin and dad Matt came for a fallow hunt recently with Kevin and son Conor. Fallow was the 4th big game species Kadin wanted on his quest to become a Master Bowhunter. After a tough first day, Kevin and Kadin had a chat about making sure his shot sequence was in place. The next day Kadin went out and nailed it, shooting these two fallow stags. Well done Kadin for listening to some well timed advice and having the presence of mind when the shot came, to shoot the way you knew you could. This award is a fantastic achievement for Kadin and we look forward to seeing more of this mad keen bowhunter in the future.

PSE X-Force Review by Eamonn Gaffney
PSE X-Force

PSE celebrate their 37th year of manufacturing bows in 2008.
The X-Force was PSE’s most exciting bow of 2007, and remains the company’s flagship bow for 2008. Like all PSE manufactured bows, it is covered by their limited lifetime warranty. This is a useful plus, and seems to be an industry standard in recent years.

Some of the PSE technology that has gone into the X-Force includes the B.E.S.T. (Biomechanically Ergonomic Slim Throat) grip, the visually striking past-parallel split limbs, Hyperlite limb pockets and of course the enormous PSE HF “Hybrid Fast” cam system. A handy feature of the cams is they are adjustable with modules, which can be easily changed without a bowpress. You can also adjust the draw length up or down by 3/8” with cam posts.
The split limbs on the X-Force are manufactured using CNC abrasive machining technologies. PSE claims their 12" split limbs are capable of more bend than has ever been seen in the archery industry. A tiny vibration damper is mounted on each limb tip, and also the end of the cable guard, removing the need for after market damping accessories.
Other useful inclusions are the multiple sight mounting holes and quick setup reference marks machined into the riser for easy centershot and nock point settings.

The bow comes with PSE factory strings; the string is made from BCY 8125 material, good for it’s high speed and durability, and the cables from BCY 450 Plus, a low stretch material. The quality of these strings can vary and it was noticed that the lower cam servings began to separate within 100 shots. This was repaired and gave no more trouble.

String weights are factory installed to maximise speed, and the X-Force foregoes any string silencers, but shoots very quietly due to 8 vibration-damping devices that are factory installed.

The cams and pockets are anodised in black and the riser and limbs are dipped in Mossy Oak New Break-Up camouflage. The entire bow is very impressively finished, as you would expect of any company’s flagship model.

The test bow was a 60-70 pound model, which was tuned for straight nock-point travel then set to 29.5” draw length and 70Lbs with a 70% let-off for the shooting tests.
On pulling the bow you notice the cams’ aggressive but impressively smooth draw and solid stops. It does have quite a short valley, but so long as your form is good, it remains very comfortable to shoot. The bow was quiet (even without string silencers) and had low levels of vibration, and no noticeable shot recoil.
The draw length out of the box was a little long, by around 1”. Fortunately, we had the appropriate draw length modules to make the change. This can be done easily without a bowpress, by replacing the top & bottom modules and relocating the draw stop peg.

Three test arrows of different weights were used for the speed testing. The string was fitted with a D-loop, and a peep sight. This was done to give speeds that you would expect when actually hunting with the bow.

Each arrow was fired three times and the average speeds are listed in the table below.

Arrow Weight Speed
504 grains 274.2 fps
430 grains 295.0 fps
353 grains 322.5 fps

Range Report
I took the X-Force to my local club to check my pin settings, and get an idea if it was as good a shooter’s bow as PSE would suggest. I was not disappointed. With pin sights and my new Easton Lightspeed arrows, the X-Force was shooting three arrow groups tight enough to get my hands around at all distances I tried, right up to 60 meters. It was also near obliterating a borrowed Rag-Bag target, with several arrows disappearing completely into the target bale.
I also took the opportunity to shoot some hunting arrows off the X-Force. When I started off, my broadheads were hitting a few inches higher than the field points at 30 meters. After moving the rest down over the course of several ends, I was able to get both G5 Strikers and NAP Thunderheads grouping with the field points.
When shooting the X-Force, I found the narrow handgrip very comfortable, reducing the possibility of torqueing the bow.
Shooting outside you can also appreciate how quiet this bow is, even at 322 FPS.

Conclusion
For a regular bow, this would be a good one, but the X-Force is more than that. It is very nice to shoot, with little vibration or noise, accurate, smooth to draw and just flat out fast!
This just might be the hunting/3-D bow of the future, and is well priced to boot.

For 2008 there has been a big expansion of the X-Force line, including the X-Force SS (Super-Short at 26 5/8” axle-axle and only weighs 3.5lbs) and the X-Force Dream Season (very similar to the X-Force, but with a longer 7” brace height). All PSE bows are distributed by Advanced Archery New Zealand, and can be viewed at www.pse-archery.com.

The X-Force retails for $1590
